Barely Earning His Crust
The Baker by Derek Malcolm, The Evening Standard, February 28, 2008 Any film starring Damian Lewis ought to be worth seeing but this "killer comedy" directed by Gareth Lewis, his brother, tries the patience a bit. Damian is Milo, a professional hitman tiring of his job, chased by another assassin because he's failed in an assignment for the first time, and relocating to a small Welsh village where the ghost of Dylan Thomas seems to stalk. He wants to be a baker but can't get away from the fact that, when the villagers discover his secret, they want some old scores settled. There are some nice cameos from Michael Gambon and other less well-known faces but we are never certain whether this is comedy or farce, and Damian has a job to persuade us that Milo isn't just a figment of the film's over-eager imagination.
