June 10, 2013: Kickstarter campaign for To Appomattox to launch in a few weeks
To Appomattox writer-producer Michael Frost Beckner has announced that the Kickstarter campaign (see the news item from April 26, 2013 for information) will launch in mid-July (exact date yet to be announced). He says, "The cast is all on board and supportive in every way." Beginning around late June, a few weeks before the launch of the Kickstarter campaign, there will be "an impressive publicity campaign in all forms of media that will begin a few weeks before the campaign launch and continue throughout." Mr. Beckner says, "The cast is all on board and supportive in every way." He adds, "Throughout the campaign we will be releasing personal videos they have shot or will shoot on behalf of this project." As for the Kickstarter campaign itself, Mr. Beckner has shared information about one of the special rewards that will be available to contributors (such as us): A special, exclusive, for-Kickstarter-contributors-only edition of the DVD that will include an expanded edition of the first episode, containing 20 extra minutes that won't be shown on television and won't be included in the episode on the commercially released DVD (the 20 extra minutes will be included on the DVD as a "bonus scenes/deleted scenes" special feature). Check back here regularlary for updates as more information becomes available.

Big blunder on the part of BBC Radio 4: A couple of weeks ago, they announced that Damian would portray Machiavelli in a new one-hour radio drama The Prince to be presented on BBC Radio 4's Saturday Drama programme on Saturday, May 25, 2013 -- but BBC Radio 4 neglected to mention that Helen also had a role in the same production! She portrays the Defense Attorney for Machiavelli, and she turns out to be another (in)famous historical figure. For those of you who may have missed the live broadcast, you may listen to it from anywhere in the world online for the next seven days here.

April 26, 2013: To Appomattox update
Lots of developments regarding To Appomattox. First off, the title has reverted back to the original To Appomattox (thank goodness!) from the "Grant vs. Lee" title that Sony Pictures had mandated. Speaking of Sony, To Appomattox producer Michael Frost Beckner announced today that the project has "officially severed ties with Sony." Although that sounds like bad news, it's actually very good, as Mr. Beckner explains: "Sony held this project hostage for two years. ... My cast and music attachments and crew are all thrilled. We're going to do this now. No more waiting around." At this point, a few US television networks (broadcast and cable) are expressing interest in presenting the miniseries. As for financing it, with Sony out, the producers are looking at an innovative option that has had some very significant success in the industry recently: It's called Kickstarter. Put simply, it is a program through which the people who want to see a project made (in this case, the fans and viewing public) collectively contribute toward it. When you're talking about several thousand to several million people, a few dollars per person adds up fast: In a recent Kickstarter campaign, Rob Thomas, Kristen Bell and the team behind the Veronica Mars movie raised nearly $6 million in contributions from fans that averaged about $30-$50 each. (There isn't any minimum contribution, either, by the way.) The goal certainly is not to fund the entire project this way, just enough of a financial commitment to convince major Hollywood backers that it's a good investment for them to add their big Hollywood bucks to. In return for pledging financial support through a Kickstarter campaign, members of the public receive incentives/rewards, typically tiered to the size of the contribution. Rewards may range from items such as posters, T-shirts and DVDs to on-set tours and roles as extras, among other things. (Specific rewards are set by the producers and others on the team who set up the Kickstarter campaign for a specific project.) Regarding Kickstarter plans for To Appomattox, Mr. Beckner said today that he has put together a pretty [Kickstarter] savvy team, and details regarding the Kickstarter will be "coming soon."

March 8, 2013: Grant vs. Lee likely to begin filming next month, and title might change back, too
Grant vs. Lee producer Michael Frost Beckner posted this news online last night: "As for when filming starts, the schedule that went into the studio today has it set for end of April. So I'd say we're pretty much right on track." He also commented, "The studio and network changed the name [from "To Appomattox" to "Grant vs. Lee"] after market research scared them away from the original title. Funny enough, most of the execs/powers-that-be have slowly come back around to the original title." The studio and network haven't announced themselves yet, and there has been no new announcement of cast confirmations/updates. However, announcements in recent months (see news update dated January 24, 2013) suggest most of the cast should remain intact. Fingers crossed that this holds true for Helen and Damian. With production now highly likely to begin next month, we should know more very soon.

Skyfall will be released on DVD in the US on February 12, 2013 -- a full month before the originally announced release date of March 12, 2013. In the UK, it will still be released on February 18, 2013, as previously announced.
January 24, 2013: An update (of sorts) on Grant vs. Lee
Some of you have been wondering lately about what's been happening with Grant vs. Lee, so here's the latest: The production does have a network on board, although the network has not been announced publicly yet. (Per the producers, that announcement will come from the network when the network is ready to make the statement. No one else is permitted to share that information at this time.) Things slowed to a halt during the holiday season, which, the producers say (in their social media postings) is "typical in Hollywood at that time of year -- nearly everything grinds to a halt," but the meetings with the network resumed a couple of weeks ago. The network and the production company are now ironing out what the producers call the "finer details" of finalizing a deal. Once that happens, the producers say, "that will determine air date, which will, in turn, determine shooting schedule." During the past week or two, the producers and staff have said that they are "optimistic and really excited" and that "lots of good things [are] going on," even though they are not at liberty to discuss the details. Back in mid-December, they said this regarding the cast presently lined up: "No one has rescinded their letter of commitment. When a final schedule is proposed, the actors will have to see if that works with their schedule (which happens with any project), and if not, we'll make adjustments then. Hopefully we'll be able to accommodate everyone." Just last week, they mentioned that if the fine-tuning of the deal takes too much longer, they might encounter conflicts with actors' schedules and have to recast some roles. But, they were quick to add, At this point, however, we're still good calendar-wise with all our cast."

January 3, 2013: Muse Of Fire nearing completion, 2013 release expected
It's been a long time coming, but Muse Of Fire: A Documentary is almost in final form and is expected to be released in 2013. The filmmakers behind the project posted on Facebook earlier this week: "It's been a while. We're about 4 -6 weeks off completion of the film. It's all working!!!! We're getting close to being happy." According to other recent posts from the filmmakers on Twitter, they are preparing two versions of the film, "the festival film and the BBC version" as they phrase it, "with some wonderful screening coming together in 2013." So it sounds as if the plan is to present the film on BBC television in the UK as well as in various film festivals (this has not been confirmed). Hopefully more news/details will surface soon.
January 2, 2013: Site updates
Today's updates: You might notice some changes on the site. Recently, the main page was modified and rearranged a bit. Now, the pages featuring performance information have been changed: Each performance now has its own web page, and virtually everything related to that performance is on that page -- project information as well as photos, programme/press booklet scans, article links, links to multimedia clips, information about home video releases, poems Helen has recited in productions, and more. As before, the Performances & Awards page has the links to each individual performance page. Because the photos are now on the performance pages, the old photo gallery pages have been removed. The Links page that used to have links to the multimedia clips for performances (which are now all on the individual performance pages) and non-performance events has been replaced with the new Multimedia Diary page that features the links for non-performance-related audio and video clips. Hopefully, this site rearrangement will make it easier to find information and materials related to specific projects. If you need help finding anything, please try the Site Directory.
