Critic's Choice:
The Forsyte Saga

ITV1, 9 pm

by Patrick Stoddart, (publication unknown, probably Sunday Express or Telegraph), April 7, 2002

It's so long since the first version took television by storm most people think John Galsworthy wrote The Forsyte Saga in black and white, but this stunning new version puts all that straight. Damian Lewis plays the cold, materialistic Soames, uncrowned head of the vast Forsyte clan, and Gina McKee is Irene, the sensitive but destitute beauty he bullies into marriage. Then there's Rupert Graves as Young Jolyon, cast out of the family for running off with his daughter's governess, and Corin Redgrave as Old Jolyon, the family's father figure and keeper of the Forsyte duty roster. There are too many characters and too much good acting to either list or explain, in a six-part saga of illicit love and betrayal that will grip the nation all over again.
