Can You Spot The Bump?
Prime-time TV is in the middle of a baby boom -- but none of the pregnancies is being written into the story lines. Here's how shows are handling their leading ladies' expanding waistlines. TV Guide, March 9, 2009 Cobie Smulders, How I Met Your Mother How they hide it: "Stay tuned for lots of awkward Robin-centric covering up in the last few episodes of our season," teases co-creator Craig Thomas. "That's something for the fans to look forward to in May." Alyson Hannigan, How I Met Your Mother How they hide it: "It's been a combination of hiding the pregnancy and occasionally winking to the audience," says co-creator Carter Bays. (Remember Lily's belly after the hot-dog-eating contest?) "Cut to us, hiding Aly behind an inexplicably large globe." Kelly Rutherford, Gossip Girl How they hide it: Let's hear it for fabulous accessories! Whether it's a high-end coat, a statement bag or a perfectly draped wrap, Lily has stayed on trend and seemingly slim. Sarah Shahi, Life How they hide it: "Sarah Shahi is more emotionally advanced and ready for a baby than her character, Dani Reese," says executive producer Rand Ravich. "So Reese will not be pregnant. She will, however, be carrying more file boxes." Rachel Griffiths, Brothers & Sisters How they hide it: Luckily, the show wrapped before Griffiths really started to show. Loose clothes and strategically placed props help, as does sitting at the table for the Walkers' many dinner parties. Parminder Nagra, ER How they hide it: "It's not been too difficult, because she's usually all bundled up," says executive producer Christopher Chulack. "It was particularly easy when we did scenes in Chicago. When you're shooting in 10-degree weather, wearing a big coat isn't a problem." |
