It's been, oh, several months since ITV 1 screened a Sunday night drama about the Second World War. So hurrah for Colditz, a ripping yarn in which decent Brits with regulation stiff upper lips correctly in place valiantly try to outwit the beastly Hun (concludes tonight).

As well as a war story, this is a love story. But since ITV viewers probably aren't ready for a love story set in a men's PoW camp, it's a long-distance romance between handsome, floppy-haired Colditz inmate Jack Rose (Tom Hardy) and lovely Lizzie, the gal he left behind (Sophia Myles).

Lizzie is about to be seduced by Jack's comrade, chippy action-dodger Nick McGrade (Damian Lewis, from Band Of Brothers).

He's a wrong 'un. But Lewis packs more charisma in his kitbag than the rest of the cast put together.
