Pick Of The WeekThe Forsyte Saga Sunday, ITV 1, 9 pm (publication unknown), May 24, 2003 The first adaptation of The Forsyte Saga, back in 1967, proved one of the most successful and memorable TV productions ever. No wonder television eventually returned to John Galsworthy's novel sequence to work it over again -- especially as it is surely the soapiest of 'classics', a kind of Edwardian Dallas or Dynasty in tea gowns and morning dress. As television, it can hardly fail, and ITV's production is thoroughly watchable, despite some questionable casting (Gina McKee as Irene -- why?). Having given us The Man Of Property and In Chancery (the best of the novels) last year, The Forsyte Saga returns with a four-part adaptation of To Let. Beginning with Aunt Hester's 80th birthday party, it soon sweeps forward to 1920 and the 18th birthday party of Soames's (Damian Lewis, pictured) adored daughter, Fleur (Emma Griffiths Malin, pictured). She -- and her forbidden love for Irene's son, Jon -- will soon be at the centre of events. ... |
