Old Etonian Damian Lewis (right), 32, may have television to thank for his rapid rise to fame, having played Major Richard Winters in Band Of Brothers and Soames in The Forsyte Saga, but he started out as a Royal Shakespeare Company stalwart. His last West End appearance was in the short-lived Donmar production of the Stephen Sondheim musical Into The Woods in 1998. He returns to the Almeida Theatre, having played Laertes to Ralph Fiennes's Hamlet there in 1995, to star in Joanna Laurens's new play, Five Gold Rings, which explores the conflict between two brothers, one a family man and the other infertile.
